PINK Floyd fans loved the new version of their favourite English rock band, Dark Side, the Floyd Experience.
You’d have thought it was the Floyd themselves as Dark Side put across their mood from the psychedelic sixties to the progressive nineties and their brief come-back for the London Live 8 concert.
The gig captured a varied back catalogue which didn’t lose Pink Floyd’s distinctive identity yet included an almost imperceptible Dark Side touch.
The all-age audience lapped it up especially enjoying the extracts from Floyd’s album, 'The Dark Side of the Moon' such as 'Money' and the haunting tribute to former band member, Syd Barrett in 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' from 'Wish you were Here'.
Andy Baker who shared the David Gilmour guitar parts with Chris Clowsley, sang David’s vocals so well he could have been the great man whilst Chris re-presented Roger Waters, song writer and lead vocalist in an equally realistic way.
In a brief interval chat, Andy said 'Shine on you Crazy Diamond' was one of his favourites.
A lover of Pink Floyd since childhood, he said standing on stage with such a fantastic set of musicians “make the hairs of my arms stand on end.
Encapsulate
“The Pink Floyd sound is very hard to encapsulate in a sentence as it is as much about time, place and feeling as it is for any specific signature elements.”
Even though the guitar music was difficult because of the time changes, the players recreated the harmony well.
Andy Baker gave an impressive guitar solo accompanied by Jim Cooper on bass in 'One of these Days' from the Meddle album.
Andy Dyehouse proved his versatility by performing on both keyboard and sax and Steve Graystone on percussion kept the rhythm going.
Pink Floyd was not only famous for its sound but for its effects. Dark Side’s gig used spectacular lighting techniques, impressive sound effects and typical Floyd projections on to a circular screen to turn the evening into a showbiz event.
